Leukemia Boy Shaochen Liang Needs Your Help!

Shaochen Liang

Gender: Male

Date of Birth: 06/11/2005

Region: Tianjin, China

Condition: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Medical Cost Needed: More than $50,000

Shaochen was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia L2 when he was three years old. By that time, the total savings of the family was only a little more than 10,000 RMB. In the past one and half years, they've spent around 160,000 RMB on the medical treatment, most of which were borrowed from or donated by a lot of warm-hearted friends and relatives. Though suffered a lot from the medical treatment, Shaochen showed a strong desire for living. The medical treatment has been very smooth. The family was very positive with the treatment. However, in March 2010, the lab work showed that the leukemia had spread to the brain. The doctor in Shandong Qilu Children's Hospital, in which Shaochen has been treated, said there is very little hope that he could be cured. Looking at Shaochen's innocent smile, his parents won't give up and decided to go to the best blood disease hospital in Tianjin, China--Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital. With the help of the warm hearted people on the internet, they went to Tianjin on March 23rd, 2010 and had the Professor of Pediatrics see Shaochen. Fortunately, the hospital finally accepted Shaochen to be treated there. We are also excited to know that the latest lab work showed that no leukemia was found in the brain! This is great news for the whole family! However, the medical treatment is expensive. They have spent more than 30,000 RMB in the past 2 weeks. They do not have more money to afford the future treatment. Please give the family a hand. Your generous help on his future medical treatment will be greatly appreciated! We believe that with your help, we will see a healthy and happy Shaochen in the near future!

Foods That Fight Cancer?

http://www.aicr.org/site/PageServer?pagename=foodsthatfightcancer_home

No single food or food component can protect you against cancer by itself. But scientists believe that the combination of foods in a predominantly plant-based diet may. There is evidence that the minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals in plant foods could interact in ways that boost their individual anti-cancer effects. This concept of interaction, where 1 + 1 = 3, is called synergy.
In addition, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans are low in calorie-density and protect against weight gain. According to the second expert report, carrying excess body fat is implicated in the development of cancer. Eating a predominantly plant based diet can help prevent weight gain and protect against those cancers whose risk is convincingly increased by higher body fat (cancers of the colorectum, esophagus, endometrium, pancreas, kidney and breast in postmenopausal women).
That is why AICR recommends that at least 2/3 of your plate should be filled with vegetables, fruit, whole grains and beans.
Much of the laboratory research on diet and cancer suggests that eating vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans will protect against cancer. Scientists are investigating how and why these foods may prevent the development of tumors.
Here is a list of foods we at AICR get asked about most often. Click each one to learn what current science can tell us about its role in protecting our health.
